Mt. Acongagua-2001
by James P. McQuiston, M.D.

This trip combines the passions of my life. First and foremost, is the chance to help others. This passion has guided my life both personally and professionally. Through the Prostate Cancer Climb, I hope to raise awareness and step up research on this disease that takes so many of our fathers and grandfathers. Headlines and evening news have long been dominated by “Women’s Health Issues.” I believe the time has come for men to speak up and be heard, and I am confident that this expedition can be a stepping stone.

High altitude and wilderness medicine has also become a passion for me. Last year, I was fortunate enough to be the medical doctor for a fundraising expedition on Mt. Kilimanjaro. This served to establish a cardiac catheterization lab in east Africa. At about 19,000 feet on my descent, I heard shouts from the peak for help. With my ER instinct, I took off on a dead run back up the scree. ....I got about 60 feet before I realized that I also was subject to altitude. I eventually made it to our victim of HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) and administered the appropriate dose of steroids and acetazolamide.

After rapid descent, the patient did well, but I had officially caught the bug for altitude and wilderness medicine. Since then I have joined the Wilderness Medical Society, and the American College of Emergency Medicine’s sections of International Health, Hyperbarics and Disaster Relief.

I have lived in the Caribbean for a few years, and led numerous treks through rainforests, waterfalls, and dormant volcanoes. From the Highlands of Scotland to the western U.S., I have sought to incorporate the wilderness in my personal life, my philanthropy, and my medical practice.

I am honored to be part of this team who climbs for such a worthy cause.

Sincerely,
James P. McQuiston, M.D.
